Artist Bio

Lydia is an artist with a gift for capturing emotion through her use of paint, color and skillful technique of capturing something beyond a mere likeness.

Lydia studied fine art with a concentration in painting at the University of Maine and the New Hampshire Institute of Art where her passion for painting was furthered. She has always been drawn to portraiture and has a talent for capturing her subjects; since college Lydia intensely studied the art of portraiture. She has been honored with painting official portraits for two Maine judges.

Lydia’s personal work is inspired by stories, people, and the complexity of our shared human experience. She feels a deep connection to the female story and the many roles that women play in society. She is drawn to capturing complex and often difficult subjects and emotions in simple and powerful compositions.

“My work focuses on portraits of women and the roles that society places on us. I have always been drawn to stories and the complexity of the human experience. I mostly work in oil paint for its versatility of surface, I love to show the medium and the texture of the paint. A portrait is about more than just a likeness, it’s a feeling that is conveyed by the expression, the lighting and the style. I love to create an entire mood around a painting so the viewer feels like they are seeing a moment of a larger story.”
